We have worked for English Heritage, Transport for London, Network Rail, London Underground, the BBC, EDF, Breyer Group, Tate & Lyle and a number of London councils. Those are organisations that audit their contractors, and they keep coming back.

The common thread is not building type, it is consequence. A strike on a warehouse is expensive. A strike on a signalling installation, a listed church or a data hall is something else, and those are the buildings where the risk assessment pushes the protection class up and where the installation has to be done without disrupting whatever the building is doing.

Rail and infrastructure

We have worked for Network Rail, London Underground and Transport for London. Infrastructure work is less about the lightning protection itself and more about everything around it: possessions, permits, isolation, induction, and the fact that nothing can overrun.

Directly employed engineers matter more here than anywhere else. The people who turn up have to already hold the right cards and already know how the site works, which is difficult to guarantee with subcontracted labour.

Critical power

In a data hall or a substation the direct strike is rarely what causes the loss. The surge is. A strike a few hundred metres away arrives through the incoming supply or along a data route and takes out controls, switching and comms without leaving a mark on the building.

That makes BS EN 62305-4 and coordinated surge protection the centre of the job rather than an afterthought, and it makes the earthing arrangement something to be measured rather than assumed.
