How often should
you test?

Annually, at eleven month intervals. Here is why.

The answer

A lightning protection system should be tested annually, at intervals of eleven months. Eleven rather than twelve does two things: it guarantees every certificate stays inside a twelve month window for insurance purposes, and it walks the test date through the calendar so earth resistance is not measured in the same ground conditions year after year.

That is the practical UK answer. The standard itself is expressed differently, as maximum intervals that vary by protection class, and it is worth knowing both.

Maximum intervals

  • Class I and II. Visual inspection every 1 year. Complete inspection every 2 years.
  • Class III and IV. Visual inspection every 2 years. Complete inspection every 4 years.
  • Risk of explosion. More frequently than the classes above.

These are the ceilings in BS EN 62305-3. An eleven month full test cycle sits inside all of them, which is why it has become the working standard in the UK.

Why eleven

Earth resistance moves with the weather. Ground that reads well in a wet February can read considerably worse in a dry August, and a system tested every August for a decade has only ever been measured at its best or its worst.

Testing every eleven months shifts the date back by a month each year, so over time the system is sampled across the whole seasonal range. It also removes the risk of a twelve month interval drifting to thirteen and putting the certificate out of date.

What a test involves

The annual cycle is a minimum, not a complete answer. A system needs checking again after a known or suspected strike on the building, after any work that changes the roof, the elevations or the earthing arrangement, and after anything is added to the roof that ought to be bonded into the system.

Roof mounted plant and solar installations are the two we see most often. Both get added by other contractors, neither gets bonded in, and the lightning protection system quietly stops being compliant until somebody tests it.

BS EN 62305-3 sets maximum intervals by class. Class I and II systems need a visual inspection every year and a complete inspection every two years. Class III and IV systems need a visual inspection every two years and a complete inspection every four. Structures with a risk of explosion need inspecting more frequently.

Is annual testing a legal requirement?

The law does not name an interval. Regulation 4(2) of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires the system to be maintained so as to prevent danger, and annual testing is how that duty is normally discharged and evidenced. Insurance requirements are usually what fix the interval at twelve months or less in practice.

When do I need an extra test outside the normal cycle?

After a known or suspected lightning strike on the building. After any work that alters the roof, the elevations or the earthing. After anything is added to the roof that needs bonding in, such as plant, a mast or solar panels. After damage from other trades. And immediately following installation, as initial verification.

What happens if we miss a test?

The system does not stop working, but the record does. That gap is what an insurer sees at renewal or after a claim, and it is what would be examined if an incident occurred. The fix is straightforward: have the system tested, take the current readings as a new baseline, and restart the cycle.
